Course Description

BreastfeedLA’s Lactation Consultant Education course is an advanced and comprehensive educational course that provides the additional 50 hours required by the IBLCE to meet eligibility criteria to sit for the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification examination. Course content will provide graduates with the background necessary to make the leap from educator to clinician while preparing students to sit for the IBLCE exam for certification as an IBCLC. This course may be utilized to satisfy the lactation education requirements for Pathway 1 or Pathway 3 of the IBCLE requirement — including the IBLCE 2021 updated requirement for 5 hours of counseling and communication skills training.

Course Objectives

Following the didactic presentations and skills competency demonstrations, participants will:

  • Possess the necessary knowledge of how to perform comprehensive maternal, child, and feeding assessments related to lactation NOTE: Practice of hands-on clinical skills occurs during Lactation Specific Clinical Experience, not provided in this course.

  • Possess adequate knowledge to develop and implement an individualized feeding plan in consultation with the lactating person

  • Possess sufficient education to provide evidence-based information regarding the lactating person's use, during lactation, of medications (over-the-counter and prescription), alcohol, tobacco, and street drugs and their potential impact on milk production and child safety

  • Possess appropriate knowledge to provide holistic, evidence-based breast/chestfeeding support and care, from preconception to weaning, for lactating people and their families

  • Possess clinical judgment sufficient to provide evidence based-information regarding complementary therapies during lactation and their impact on a lactating person's milk production and the effect on their child

  • Possess the necessary skills to use the principle of family-centered care while maintaining a collaborative, supportive relationship with clients

BreastfeedLA’s Lactation Education program is proudly taught by women of color Lactation Consultants within a framework of reproductive justice. Our curriculum is culturally responsive, intentionally inclusive, and tailored to the specific needs of our diverse communities.

Prerequisites

Lactation Consultant Education Course prerequisites include:

  • Successful completion of a 45 hour lactation education training (i.e. CLE/C/S) within the last 5 years

  • A passion for elevating breast/chestfeeding as a public health strategy to improve disparities in health outcomes

  • The commitment to yourself and your community that you can do this!

Instructor

Clinical Director, IBCLC Aaliyah Sade

Aaliyah is an Afro-Indigenous, Black Chicanx artist, activist, full-spectrum birth keeper, certified yoga instructor, certified midwife assistant/student, and JEDI consultant. She has spent nearly half her life serving in academic, community, global, legislative, out-of-hospital, and hospital spaces. These experiences inform her learning, teaching, and dedication to disrupting health inequities through remembering ancestral practices of midwifery and lactation. Over the past decade, she has explored the possibilities within healthcare and community organizing, attending both performing arts and health sciences schools. Blending her passions for art, health, and justice, she earned a B.A. in World, Arts, and Cultures: Arts Activism and Global Health at UCLA. She double-weaves a trauma-informed, equity lens into her care practices bridging her global and local reproductive justice organizing experience and knowledge gained from hundreds of families she serves in the perinatal period. She is extremely excited about the opportunity to learn with and from students in BreastfeedLA programs.

BreastfeedLA is an approved provider by the California Board of Registered Nursing. This course offers contact hours in continuing education will be offered. BreastfeedLA’s provider number is CEP 16435. Licensee must maintain certificate for a period of four years.
