Trauma Informed Care of the LGBTQIA2S+ Patient

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Improve patient outcomes by learning skills to develop trust and rapport with LGBTQIA2S+ patients.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of historical contexts that impact LGBTQIA2S+ patients healthcare experiences.

  • Identify and mitigate the impact of historical biases and discriminatory practices, leading to a more inclusive and affirming healthcare environment for LGBTQ+ patients.

  • Apply trauma-informed care principles to LGBTQIA2S+ obstetric patients, fostering a safer and more supportive healthcare environment for those patients who may have experienced trauma related to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Meet the Speaker

Jessica Seales, MSN, RNC-OB, C-ONQS

Jessica Seales, MSN, RNC-OB, C-ONQS is a Perinatal Nursing Professional Development Specialist with experience in labor and delivery and postpartum nursing. She brings a wealth of practical knowledge and leadership to the field, stemming from her unique background that encompasses bedside nursing, community organizing, trauma-informed care, and health justice. Jessica champions trauma-informed care as a standard of care, is passionate about developing nurses as advocates, and believes in reshaping healthcare through a lens of equity, autonomy and justice. She serves on the National Policy Committee of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) and the Trauma-Informed Leadership Team for her health system. She is certified in obstetrics and obstetric and neonatal quality and safety.
